The CAVA Women’s Volleyball Championship is set to begin on Friday, bringing a competitive volleyball atmosphere back to Kathmandu once again.
Eight nations, including hosts Nepal, will compete for the title in the tournament. With strong home support, a blend of experienced and young players, and growing confidence from recent international competitions, Nepal has attracted special attention this time.
In the tournament, Nepal, India, Kyrgyzstan, and the Maldives are placed in Group A, while Iran, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh are in Group B. Nepal will begin its campaign on Jestha 8 against defending champions India. The Nepal–India clash is being viewed as one of the tournament’s most exciting matches.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference held on Thursday, Nepal captain Niruta Thagunna said that playing on home court with the support of local fans would provide huge energy to the team. Captaining the national side for the first time, Niruta stated that there is strong coordination between experienced and young players, and Nepal is prepared to deliver a strong performance.
She said, “The support of home fans gives extra motivation to players. Our preparation has been good, and we are aiming for a positive start in the tournament.”
Similarly, defending champion India’s captain Nandana said that despite limited preparation time, the team arrived in Kathmandu with the goal of retaining the title. She noted that competition among South Asian teams has become increasingly intense in recent years.
Kazakhstan captain Nataliya also stated that despite limited preparation, her team would enter the tournament aiming to win the championship.
In recent years, the popularity of women’s volleyball in Nepal has grown significantly. The enthusiastic presence of fans during international tournaments held on home soil is expected to provide additional confidence to the Nepali team. As a result, this edition of the CAVA Women’s Championship is being viewed not only as a battle for the title, but also as another test of the popularity and potential of Nepali women’s volleyball.
