Kathmandu — Smriti Century, a lawmaker from Rastriya Swatantra Party, said the government must take employment creation seriously in order to stop the growing migration of young people abroad.
Speaking at Thursday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, she said the state must seriously address both the hopes and frustrations of the “Gen Z” generation.
She said, “As I stand in this Parliament today, I deeply feel both the hopes and frustrations of Gen Z youths who are demanding their rights — from the streets of Baneshwor to social media.”
She stated that her generation has spent years hearing only political instability and empty promises, while young people are still being forced to leave the country in search of employment opportunities abroad.
She said, “My generation has listened to political instability and promises for years. The pages of history changed, but sadly, the fate of my generation did not. Even today, every household has the same story — some sons are sweating in foreign lands, while some daughters wipe away tears at the airport as they leave. Young people do not want to leave this country, but the lack of employment opportunities and the helplessness of past governments have forced them to do so.”
She warned that the migration of youths abroad is weakening not only the country’s workforce but also its future potential. She added that only by creating opportunities for the young people demanding rights in Baneshwor can the country prevent itself from becoming empty.
“We are not only losing the younger generation; we are also losing the country’s potential and future. Only by creating employment opportunities for Gen Z youths demanding their rights in Baneshwor can we stop this country from becoming hollow,” she said.
She urged the government to initiate historic reforms aimed at preventing youth migration.
“I would like to request the government that this term should not be limited to merely running the state. Let it become a historic moment of transformation to stop youth migration,” she said.
